Autumn Haiku
in V formation
five ducks on a mission
—+—
October cold
clings to trees, houses,
throat and nose.
—+—
autumn’s chill
turns the sycamore
a firey red
—+—
a sudden burst of cackles –
magpies at my window
—+—
a hungry magpie
pecks the ground;
why do you answer, worm?
—+—
into the wood:
urban commotion
suddenly silenced
—+—
a pair of ducks
keep company
under the bridge
—+—
crunchy autumn leaves:
pedestrian’s delight
—+—
old oak and I -
knotted bark
and wrinkled brow
—+—
morning rain:
four ducks laughing
on the lawn
—+—
October morning:
dewdrops slip
on spider strings
—+—
fire alarm at dawn:
dressing gowns float
in mist
—+—
autumn morning –
treetops disappear
in the mist
—+—
a youngster plays
in the road –
grey squirrel
—+—
falling shapes at my window:
bomber magpies
—+—
foxes at midnight
scream
like children
—+—
a gang of ducks
creating a racket
at my window
—+—
two friends
cycle and laugh
in the rain
—+—
sucking up leaves, these workers
take away my autumn
—+—
rustling bush –
squirrel’s tail
disappears
—+—
waiting for buses
and watching leaves
fall
—+—
breathing clouds
into a clear blue sky –
autumn afternoon
—+—
parading round the river bend
a whole troop of ducks!
—+—
the sun peeps through water droplets
on my window
—+—
three students
scuffle in the leaves
collecting conkers
—+—
on the lake
fountains shoot up
amid soaring seagulls
—+—
magpie thief
taking the squirrel’s
freshly buried nuts
—+—
where did I put that conker?
squirrel among the leaves
—+—
midnight:
the howling of dogs
and fireworks
—+—
two leaves
nestle together
on the bench
—+—
the tree grows thin and bare
as squirrels feast below
—+—
at the window
a glowing grin
snuffed out
